The Words, The Web, and The Work

  • Finished a draft of an entire collection of flash, entitled: And Everything Nice. Too bad it's going back to the drawing board, but ah, well! It happens.
  • Got back a personal rejection for a drabble at Every Day Fiction. My perennial, "More! More! Tantalizing, but want more!" kind of note. Sometimes this phenomenon calls out my grumpy Bah humbug! vibe, but hey, it's a good sign. More's a comin'.
  • Figured out how to get synopses on my home page here, and while it does mean I can no longer restrict posts to just Therefore I Am..., I think it's an improvement.
  • Changed my primary twitter account from fandom-based whispersofromy to LianaMir1. I will no longer be updating the old Twitter.
  • Am working on building out a Zazzle store or two. More on that when there's more to tell.
  • Got started on Textbroker.com. I'm actually making some income!
  • Speaking of which, any praying folks out there, the government's holding onto my bucks and things are about to get not pretty financially if something doesn't break.
  • Am only one story short of a little Pearl Wise collection. Feeling out for the prompt: The Rule of Alchemy. It is:

For every portion of light to come into the world, a certain portion of darkness must be overcome.

Inspire any thoughts? Questions? I'd love the help, just saying. :grins:

And that, folks, is all for the moment!

Sunday Writing Stats

WRITTEN
We spent the last so long adapting some of my fanfiction to original fiction, in addition to wrapping up some stories I had previously begun and doing a ficlet writing session to music. Adaptations:

  • Goddess of Computers
  • Dorm Daddy Driver's Ed
  • Square Root
  • Tech Support
  • At Your Altar

This last week, I wrote 6900+ words. My goal was 5000+. My retained words didn't beat the 5000+ goal, but there's always next week.

POSTED
So, not that I expect a lot of people over here at this point, but I have consolidated my worldbuilding locale at Wikia. For my own sanity, I need a central location to dump story notes. It'll take a while to get all the ones I already have on there, but it's worth the effort.

SOLD
"A Dream of Spring" sold to Every Day Poets. Will link when it goes online.

PUBLISHED
Got quite a few things up since the last time we talked, so here goes.

"Baker of Souls," about a woman who is defeated by her own failure; "A Pretty Word," an exploration of the operation of the uncommon Writers among the powerful of Breath; and "The Rule of Prayer," a short that had been hiding in the bottom of my inbox for forever. See Bibliography

Also published some under my other name, but that gets tracked elsewhere.

Three Happinesses and a Request

1. So on a whim, I decided to see if I had any paying sales for "The Alchemist" yet, a short story written under a pen name, and I did! One.

2. Also, reviewed! Four stars for "The Alchemist" at Amazon.

"I was pleasantly surprised by this story..."

3. I found myself on iTunes. I don't use Apple myself, but it felt awesome just seeing it there.

4. I would be grateful for any unbiased reviews of any of the pieces I have available. Barnes and Noble only has "Portrait of a Butterfly." Amazon has everything but "Portrait of a Butterfly." Everything but "The Alchemist" is available for free on the Downloads page.

Will write you a ficlet if you link your review on B&N or Amazon in the comments. Or iTunes, if that's your cuppa.

Something Old, Something New

So I'm taking the month of November to scribble. Yes, scribble. Not nano, not expect, not create perfection and masterpieces, just remember why it was I always loved to scribble.

Something Old
A long time ago, I wrote a drabble entitled, "City of Glass." It's now on submission at The Journal of Compressed Creative Arts. I loved this little story, but drabbles traditionally aren't very marketable, so I shelved it in the dusty electronic bins of someday stories. Today, I dusted it off and sent it. We hope.

Something New
I love short fiction, but finding whole magazines that publish the kind I'm interested in reading—and writing—was always difficult for me. I don't know how I missed this resource: Duotrope Digest. It's a search engine for writers to submit their material. I'm using it to discover new havens for both.

Something Special
So I've been reading Just a Whim, linked on the sidebar. A lovely little gem. It's the characters that make this story awesome. Thyme is the feistiest, most determined and creative girl. Her brother, Theo, is just funny. He tends to go with the flow, try and be opportunistic and greedy, but he's loyal and interesting and never quite succeeds at being taken seriously. Whim is still trying to figure out who he is, and he's the one who the story centers around.

Whim has finally walked away from his egotistical, gloating, and sadistic father, who has the power to grant a person's greatest wish or fear. Whim is the product of such a wish and has a similar power, but no social intelligence at all. Thankfully for him, he meets Thyme who undertakes to teach him the basics of being human, of living in this messy world that doesn't play by the rules that have undergirded his entire life, and of falling in love.

It's an enjoyable, generally light read with some serious moments as well. A nice reminder that life is always what we make of it.

[Note: I said I'd post this review at B&N, but the website has decided to do nothing if I click on the submit button, so I posted it over at Amazon instead.]

Something Blue
The illustration for "Crossing the Barrier" has been ordered and I should be able to show you something pretty soon. And it will have blue!

New and Anticipated Fiction

Just a Whim
Just a Whim

So, I have some very dear friends that are getting their stories out into the world, starting with Jocelyn Aitkin. I read Just a Whim for her in beta and I can hardly wait to see how it all turned out when she finalized it. I'll post a review here and on B&N when I'm done. (She also did the artwork herself. I'm trying not to be envious!)

Summerlight: a novel of Vardin is now one installment complete. Thanks to G. Jackson, my wonderful, wonderful beta.

Speaking of which, she is writing an absolutely amazing story that I get to read for her. It's not done yet, but already I'm waiting anxiously for when I can buy it.

Also, check out the new short story, a bit of flash fiction of one of the hunter daughters of Vardin, "Portrait of a Butterfly." Hope you like!

The Little Things

Finding somebody that actually understands what you're going for and, without fail, helps you to bring it out in your fiction is rare. I have found somebody like that for writing in this universe.

Right now, she is helping me pull together Summerlight, which I will begin posting soon on a weekly basis. I'd like to go ahead and get a few installments right before beginning, but my track record for sitting on new fiction is not good. We'll see... :eyes self suspiciously:

Also, found beautiful artist, ephemere, that will be illustrating "Crossing the Barrier," starting work somewhere around the end of the month. (Gotta pay her and all that.) You can check out her work here.
