So I hadn’t meant for this to be so depressing and horrible, but um… There it is in black and white—the reason Hayley is the way she is.

Scarred

She's not in love. Really.

Hayley isn’t the kind of woman to be in denial, but she’s never liked a problem she doesn’t know how to untangle.

Warning: Mentions abuse.

Flash Fiction Short Story

Hayley Lamar was not in love. Nope. She lay on her bunk in her shared dorm room—mercifully empty of roommates—staring at the ceiling, counting tiles, and lying to herself.

Not in love. Kade was a great friend. They got along absolutely perfectly because neither of them were interested in romance.

Hayley groaned, rolled over onto her stomach, and blew a stray hair out of her eyes. “Denial don’t suit ya, girl,” she informed herself soundly.

She liked Kade, even knowing that physical intimacy still made her want to hurl. She shook her head at herself helplessly. “Thanks, Dad.”
